When you swim the breaststroke, always remember to glide your head back into the water after each breath. Do not keep your head above the water as it will strain your neck. The other point that most swimmers are unaware of is that during the inhale phase, they should look down and slightly in front instead of looking at the end of the pool. The reason is because that looking towards the end of the pool will tend to overextend the neck.


Similar to the breaststroke, when swimming the butterfly stroke, always keep your head aligned with the spine and avoid any form of jerking motions. During the inhale phase, look down to the bottom and slightly in front. Also, try to avoid rotating your head to the side when taking in air as it puts the neck in an awkward position.

Flip Turns

The key point to remember here is to tuck your head in during flip turns. If you overextend your head while turning, it can lead to neck injuries.
