Next Monday is Memorial Day in the United States, so what do most of them plan to do over the long weekends? With such favourable temperatures for swimming, a majority of them will head for the pool. However, they have to be reminded that water safety still takes priority over pleasure. Without proper care taken, it can lead to dangerous situations.
“Make water safety a priority. Learning to swim is one of the best steps someone can take to develop skills and water safety behaviors. People then can be more comfortable and safe when they are in, on and around the water,” said Mary McCord, the executive director of the First Capital District chapter of the American Red Cross.
Here are some guidelines recommended by the Red Cross that everyone should adhere to.
Firstly, one should only swim in designated areas that are supervised by lifeguards. Always obey the warning signs and listen to the instructions given by the lifeguards as they are the ones who knows best. If possible, have a friend tag along with you just in case. Secondly, as a parent, always keep a look out for your children who are swimming or even if they are near the water. This is a responsibility of a parent and we shouldn’t simply rely on the lifeguard. Thirdly, should an emergency or accident occur, always know when to contact the ambulance. Lastly, take a look at your surroundings and ensure that there are always rescue equipment such as life jackets, situated near to the pool and is accessible should you require it.
