Hooray! The June holidays are just around the corner! Have you made any plans for your kids yet? I’m sure that all of them deserve a well-earned break. Perhaps a short getaway to somewhere near would be nice?
Recently, there are many people making arrangements to travel to nearby resorts such as Bali, Batam, Bintan, Desaru, Redang and many others. It seems like a lot of adventurous people out there enjoy water activities such as snorkelling, diving, canoeing, rafting and many more.
However, it recently came to my attention that some of these people didn’t know how to swim. Firstly, it is extremely dangerous to swim in the open sea even for experts. Nobody can predict when strong currents or massive waves will approach. Secondly, without even having the basics of swimming, it is truly not advisable to enter the sea. The open sea is very different from any swimming pools. It doesn’t gradually get deeper like any normal swimming pool. In fact, you may be able to feel the bottom at one moment, but the next instance not feel it at all. Thirdly, if you truly want to enjoy the holiday, you shouldn’t have to fear the water or worry about drowning. You may say that there’s always a life jacket, but remember, it can only help to a certain extent.
Just last December, the lives of 5 Singaporeans were claimed from the Mersing boat tragedy. The boat travelling to the mainland from a kelong near Sibu island was overloaded. Not to mention, there were not enough life jackets on the boat for all 29 passengers. Furthermore, none of the passengers were told to put on these life jackets. When the boat capsized, chaos struck. Although the rescue boat arrived 10 minutes after the boat sank, some passengers were already unable to pull through. There were some who had to be admitted to hospital as well because they drank too much sea water. It was an extremely sad tragedy.
Nobody wishes for such things to ever happen to anyone. As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” We aren’t able to predict what’s going to happen next. However, we can get ourselves prepared for it. If you have the intention of going to any resorts this coming holiday, please ensure that your whole family is able to swim. Swimming can really be a life-saver when you need it most.
