The Synergy Swim Academy located in Napa County, California is a local partner of the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative. The initiative is a national child-focused water safety initiative of the USA Swimming Foundation. This initiative sets to provide all children an opportunity to learn swimming. Till date, more than a million children have managed to obtain swimming lessons from this Make a Splash initiative. Along with the Queen of the Valley Medical Center and Synergy Medical Fitness Center, the Synergy Swim Academy came up with a water safety day to raise awareness on water safety to reduce the number of drownings.
This event is divided into land and water activities. For the land activities, participants will be taught on how to perform CPR, how to recognise and use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and some other water safety related things. As for the water activities, participants will be taught on how to wear, float & swim in a life jacket, how to recognise swimmers in distress and trouble while keeping yourself away from danger, and how to perform some basic water rescues. All these lessons will be conducted by a certified swimming instructor.
The initiative was created for multiple reasons. Firstly, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children aged between one and fourteen. Secondly, sixty to seventy percent of African-American and Hispanic children do not know how to swim. Thirdly, on average, there is a total of nine drownings in the USA each day. Fourthly, approximately seventy five percent of all child drownings occur because of a lapse of adult supervision of less than five minutes. Lastly, the children who are in the ethnic minority are close to about three times more likely to drown compared to their Caucasian peers. These are some of the main reasons that made the Synergy Swim Academy felt the need for emphasis on water safety.
Even in Singapore, we have always emphasise on the importance of water safety. This is because drowning can happen to anyone at anytime. It doesn’t indicate or warn us before it actually occurs. In fact, it can take place over a space of a few seconds. This is where having swimming skills and knowledge of water safety pays off. At Happy Fish Swim School, all of our instructors are certified. We believe that you should only learn swimming from those who are qualified.
