Ages 3 to 5, parent welcome in the water

Private toddler swimming lessons at your condo pool (ages 3 to 5)

Gentle, play-based 45-minute lessons that make a small child safe and happy in water. Your own pool, the same coach every week, and you in the water for the first few if that helps.

Each coach sets their own price. Two toddlers at a similar stage can share one coach.

Under 3? Read this first

We recommend condo pool lessons from 3, and we mean it kindly. Babies and young toddlers cannot regulate their body temperature the way older children can, and an outdoor condo pool is cooler, windier and sunnier than an indoor heated pool, with water quality that changes with the weather. Many little ones simply fall sick after a cold, breezy session, and a shivering child learns nothing. For babies and toddlers under 3 we recommend an indoor heated pool at Happy Fish Swim School, our sister swim school, where the water is warm, the changing rooms are warm, and the instructors specialise in this age. Read our full advice for babies, including when a condo session can still work.

Readiness matters more than birthdays

The best predictor of a good first lesson is not a child's age but a few simple signs. Your toddler is probably ready if most of these are true:

  • Follows a two-step instruction ("hold the wall and kick")
  • Can stay with an activity for 20 to 30 minutes with an adult leading
  • Is comfortable with water on the face in the bath or shower, even if not thrilled
  • Is happy to be handled by a friendly adult who is not a parent, or is fine with you in the water
  • Can tell you when they are cold or tired

If two or three of these are missing, waiting six months costs nothing and usually saves a package. Bath play, blowing bubbles and pouring water over the head are the best preparation. More in our guide on the best age to start.

How a toddler lesson runs

Lessons are 45 minutes including short rests on the steps, which is as long as a 3-year-old should spend in an unheated pool. For the first two or three lessons a parent may join in; after that most children are happy with the coach while you watch from the deck.

In a good toddler lesson everything is a game with a purpose: pouring, splashing and "washing the face" build comfort with water on the head; "motorboat" kicks on a noodle teach a horizontal body; "starfish" on the coach's hands becomes a back float. Songs and counting mark the routine so the child knows what comes next. There should be no forcing under, ever. Look for a coach whose profile mentions toddlers, and read what other parents say in the reviews.

Water temperature, honestly

Condo pools in Singapore are typically 28 to 30 degrees, unheated, and cooler on rainy or windy days. That is comfortable for a child who is moving and in daylight, and it is why toddler lessons should stay at 45 minutes, keep moving, and ideally sit in the late morning or afternoon when the water has had some sun. Bring a towel and dry clothes to the pool and change straight after. If your condo has a heated pool, or you have a heated pool at home, lessons are easier; say so in your pool notes when you book.

What toddlers often achieve in 8 lessons

A typical 3 to 4-year-old who starts with no water experience will, after 8 weekly lessons, put their face in happily, blow bubbles, float on front and back with light support, kick on a board across the pool, climb out unaided, and jump in to the coach and turn back to the wall. Some go further, some take longer. A 5-year-old usually moves faster and starts the kids skills within the first package.

How prices work

There is no fixed price list. Each coach sets their own price per 45-minute lesson for 1, 2, 3 or 4 learners, and you see it on their profile before you pay.

Set by the coach

Coaches price their own lessons, usually by experience and how far they travel. As a guide, most private condo lessons in Singapore are priced between about $50 and $100 per 45 minutes for one learner. When 2 to 4 learners share, the coach's group price is split between them.

What you pay

Frequently asked questions

Can a 3-year-old learn to swim?

A 3-year-old can learn to be safe and happy in water: to hold the wall, float with support, kick, blow bubbles and climb out. Independent swimming across a pool usually comes at 4 to 6. Lessons at 3 are about confidence and habits, and they make the later stages much quicker.

Can I be in the water with my child?

Yes, and for the first two or three lessons it helps children who are new to water or new to strangers. The coach leads, you provide the familiar face. As your child settles you move to the steps, then the deck.

Is the condo pool too cold for a toddler?

Sometimes. Condo pools run about 28 to 30 degrees, which is fine for a moving 3 to 5-year-old for 45 minutes in daylight. It is not fine for a baby, and it is marginal for a slight 3-year-old on a cloudy morning. Choose a late-morning or afternoon slot, and expect a good coach to end early if lips turn blue. Under 3, please read the babies page.

How long before my toddler swims on their own?

Many 4-year-olds can float on their back and glide a few metres unaided after a package of 8. Swimming a width without help typically takes a second package. Progress depends heavily on how often they are in the water between lessons.

What if my child cries or refuses?

It happens, and it is not a failure. A good toddler coach slows down, plays at the steps, and lets your child set the pace. Some children need two or three lessons before they leave the parent's arms. If it is clear your child is not ready, you can cancel the rest of the package: every lesson 24 hours or more away is refunded automatically.

Do coaches use floats or armbands?

Most use them sparingly. Kickboards and noodles help a toddler feel the water moving under them, and the coach's hands do most of the supporting. Many coaches avoid armbands because they teach a vertical posture that has to be unlearned later.
